Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
